Southwest Metro Progressing Towards Completion
Residents across Canterbury are a major step closer to faster and more reliable public transport, with construction of the Sydney Southwest Metro conversion now more than 85% complete.
Train testing and commissioning are well underway across the line, with more than 2,500 of the required 9,000 testing hours already completed, covering approximately 17,000 kilometres so far.
The Sydenham to Bankstown extension remains on track to open in the second half of 2026.
Faster Travel Times for Locals
When metro services begin operating later this year, local commuters will benefit from significantly shorter travel times across Sydney.
Expected travel time improvements include:
• Campsie to Macquarie University: 44 minutes, saving 17 minutes
• Lakemba to Victoria Cross: 37 minutes, saving 24 minutes
The new metro line will deliver services every four minutes during peak periods, helping residents get to work, university and appointments more quickly and reliably.
Major Upgrades Across the Corridor
Construction and upgrade works continue across stations and rail infrastructure throughout the southwest corridor.
Works include station accessibility upgrades, platform improvements, rail corridor upgrades and new metro infrastructure at stations including Campsie, Belmore, Lakemba and Wiley Park.
Testing and commissioning will continue throughout May as crews prepare the line for passenger services.
Southwest Link Buses to Continue
Fare-free Southwest Link buses will continue operating while final conversion and testing works are completed, helping commuters remain connected during the transition period.
The Minns Labor Government has continued working closely with local communities and businesses throughout the project to minimise disruption while delivering a modern and reliable public transport network for southwest Sydney.
